Julia Misasi

Medical Office Administrator and Surgical Coordinator

Julia is an experienced MOA and has been with the Complex Hernia Program since 2023. She completed an undergraduate degree in Medical Anthropology at the University of Toronto and subsequently a medical office administrator diploma. She is deeply passionate about patient centered care, patient experience, and health equity.

Julia is currently away on leave.

Ben Fung, MD, FRCSC

Complex Hernia and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Surgeon

Dr. Ben Fung is a general surgeon specializing in Abdominal Wall Reconstruction and Minimally Invasive Surgery.

He completed his medical school training at the University of Toronto and his general surgery residency at the University of Ottawa. He went on to complete a fellowship in Complex Hernia and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction, Minimally Invasive Surgery at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He is a board member of the Canadian Hernia Society and Committee Chair of the American Hernia Society.

His clinical interests include complex abdominal wall reconstruction, robotic surgery, and quality of life restoration.

He also specializes in complex endoscopy including endoscopic management of GI tract defects and endobiliary interventions.

Laura Lam

Medical Office Administrator and Surgical Coordinator

Laura has over 20 years of experience supporting busy surgical practices. Throughout her career, she has coordinated complex surgical bookings, served as a key liaison between surgeons, hospitals, diagnostic facilities, and referring physicians, and has developed a reputation for keeping busy clinical practices running efficiently and seamlessly.

Groin Hernia Surgery

We treat all groin hernias including inguinal, femoral, obturator, spigelian hernias, primary or recurrent. Our techniques include:

  • Open, laparoscopic or robotic repairs

  • Mesh based repairs

  • Tissue based repairs - Shouldice or Desarda

Please note we do not treat sports hernias or athletic pubalgia.

We manage the full spectrum of hernia related complications :

  • Recurrent hernias

Complex Hernia Surgery

We treat the full range of complex hernia surgery including:

  • Abdominal hernia surgery (ventral / incisional / parastomal / flank / diaphragm / perineal)

  • Recurrent hernias

  • Rectus diastasis with concurrent hernias

  • Abdominal wall reconstruction and component separation

  • Loss of domain management

Please note we do not treat paraesophageal / hiatal hernias or reflux.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy

  • Upper endoscopy (EGD) - upper GI symptoms

  • Lower endoscopy (flexible sigmoidoscopy / colonoscopy) - colorectal cancer screening, FIT+, lower GI symptoms

  • Feeding access (PEG, PEJ, PEGJ)

  • Therapeutic endoscopy (endoscopic closure of GI tract defects, endoscopic biliary interventions)
