Contrary to popular belief, there are no weight or activity restrictions while living with a hernia. So long as it doesn’t cause pain, you can lift, run, and exercise however much you’d like. These activities contribute to <5% of the forces that your hernia sees and won’t cause it to become significantly larger or dangerous.
You can ensure you are in the best shape for surgery by:
Weight optimization - BMI <40
Smoking cessation
Diabetes optimization - A1C <8%.
Work with your family MD to achieve these things prior to your complex hernia surgery.
-
If your hernia symptoms are gradually getting worse and you feel you need a more urgent assessment, have your referring provider send us a message and we will re-evaluate your triage priority.
If you suddenly have a painful bulge that you cannot push back in, nausea and vomiting, or unable to pass gas or stool, you must present to the nearest emergency department or call 911.
